About prof. dr. Hermann Minkowski

Prof. Dr. Hermann Minkowski was a mathematician, one of the pioneers of the theory of relativity.

  • Prof. Dr. Hermann Minkowski was born on June 22, 1864 in Kaunas. Here he studied at the Kaunas Governorate (now Maironis) gymnasium.
  • Since 1872 he studied at the Königsberg gymnasium, after 1880 he studied at the university of this city.
  • In 1883 he received the Grand Prize of mathematical sciences (Grand Prix des Sciences Matematiques) from Paris Academy of Sciences.
  • In 1885, H. Minkowski defended his PhD thesis at the Königsberg University (supervisor Carl Louis Ferdinand von Lindemann).
  • Hermann Minkowski worked as a professor of mathematics at the universities of Bonn (1887–1894), Königsberg (1894–1896), and Zürich (1896–1902). In Zürich, Minkowski taught mathematics to Albert Einstein, the future founder of relativity theory.
  • Since 1902 H. Minkowski was a professor at the University of Göttingen, Germany.
  • His works have been published in many languages.
  • Prof. Dr. H. Minkowski died on January 12, 1909 in Göttingen, Germany.

About conference

The international scientific conference organised by the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and the the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (Germany) is dedicated to the memory of Professor Dr. Hermann Minkowski.

The conference will be held on September 23-25, 2026 in the historic Aula, A. Mickevičius st. 37, Kaunas.

The University of Lithuania was solemnly opened in this Aula in February 16 1922.

June 1, 2026 – Abstract submission;

June 30, 2026 – Authors notified of acceptance;

September 1, 2026 – Registration, including payment of fee, ends;

The conference will be held on September 23–25, 2026.

Registration fee: 150 Eur. 

All co-authors of accepted presentations must register.

The registration fee for Bachelor’s and Master’s students is 50 Eur, and for PhD students – 100 Eur.

The conference dinner and accompanying person’s dinner cost 50 Eur each.

Abstract template

Summaries of the accepted presentations will be published in an e-publication, which will have an ISBN.
The selected papers of the Conference will be published in the Lithuanian Mathematical Journal, Editor-in-Chief Olga Štikonienė,
All papers will be peer-reviewed.
The Special Issue will be coordinated by Guest Editors J. Brüdern, D. Bahns, M. Kopa and M. Ragulskis.

Cancellations must be made in writing to the Organizing Secretariat. Cancellations received prior to 1 May 2026 will receive a full refund minus a € 25 for administration fee. Cancellations received between 1 May 2026 and 1 June will receive a refund of the fee minus a € 75. Later cancellations will not be refunded. Substitute delegates will be accepted. Registration can only be confirmed once payment is received.

How to reach the city Kaunas:

1. From Kaunas Airport

  • Bus. There is a direct bus route 29G which goes from/to the city center (scheme). 29G bus timetable can be found here. Plan your trip ahead by clicking here. Kaunas airport bus stop location.
  • Taxi. Kaunas Airport approved taxi rank can be found just in front of the arrivals terminal. All taxi cabs accept cash and credit cards. More information here

2. From Vilnius Airport

  • Bus. Regular intercity buses run from Vilnius Bus Station to Kaunas Bus Station. Buses are operated by several companies, including Kautra and Toks. The journey takes about 1.5–2 hours. Tickets can be purchased online, at the bus station, or directly from the driver. Timetables and more information can be found https://www.kautra.lt/ and https://toks.lt/.
  • Express bus  (The company „Ollex“) transports passengers from Vilnius airport. Buses run daily on the following route: Vilnius Airport – Kaunas (Circle K, Savanoriu ave. 404B).   • Train. Take the special Vilnius–Airport train from Vilnius Airport to Vilnius Railway Station, which runs every 30–60 minutes and takes about 7 minutes; tickets can be purchased at the station, at ticket machines, on the train, or online via LTG Link. From Vilnius Railway Station, transfer to a train to Kaunas Railway Station, with trains running several times per day and taking approximately 1 hour 3 minutes; tickets for this leg can also be bought online, at the station, or on the train. The total journey from the airport to Kaunas takes about 1 hour 50 minutes.
